A supermarket giant has stepped up its bid to open a store in Amble as it prepares to submit a series of plans.

Tesco is on the brink of entering four planning applications to Alnwick District Council for the Co-op store on Queen Street in Amble town centre.

The chain bought the shop from the Co-op in April this year since when it has been closed.

A husband and wife team have triumphed at a world Kayaking event. Tamsin Green was the winner at the Surf Kayak World Cup Finals in France at the weekend, while husband Dan came a respectable fifth.

Cracks in the harbour at Amble

This is the dramatic picture of cracks that have appeared in Amble harbour as a result of the recent floods.

The harbour remained sealed off yesterday as engineers continued to work to establish the severity of the damage caused by increased water pressure on the structure.

And the 100-metre section of the harbour and the pier sealed off to pedestrians is expected to remain closed to the public for the foreseeable future.

Revellers were evacuated from a funfair after cracks appeared in a harbour wall nearby. Emergency services were called to Amble harbour, on the south bank of the River Coquet, near the car park at Leazes Street, just after 5pm yesterday.

They were called by the harbourmaster who was worried about the condition of the wall and 18,000 litres of diesel in a nearby storage tank.

A series of cracks had appeared and worsened over the preceding days and, after a full assessment, a nearby amusement park was evacuated and the diesel was siphoned off.

Warkworth has won two prizes in the Northumbria In Bloom competition.

The village was named best large village with judges praising as "not afraid to experiment." And the religious category was shared by St Lawrence Church in Warkworth, and St Michael and All Angels, Felton.
