Hauxley exhibition marks 80 years since fishermen's deaths

The deaths of three young Northumberland fishermen at sea 80 years ago will be marked by a special exhibition brought together by the niece of one of the lost men.

George Taylor, Richard Armstrong and Andrew Allen Oliver, who lived at Hauxley, near Amble, were never seen again after their coble was caught in a storm in November 1929.

The tragedy rocked the close-knit village, and now the niece of one of the men has organised an exhibition to commemorate the 80th anniversary of their deaths.

Work is underway at one of Northumberland's most historically important churches to get it off the at-risk list.

The church of St Lawrence at Warkworth has stood at the heart of the village since the 12th Century and is a Grade I listed building.

Today marks a special day on the North East calendar as we celebrate the life of the patron saint of Northumberland, St Cuthbert.

Often regarded as the most popular saint of medieval times and one of the most important, March 20 sees people celebrate the anniversary of the death of the region's own patron saint.

Future looks brighter for Warkworth historic site

The future looks brighter for a number of the North East's at-risk historic treasures - including the Church of St Lawrence at Warkworth.

Yesterday an English Heritage grant of £14,000 towards a rescue and interpretation saw the future of Grade I-listed Hollinside, overlooking Derwent Walk Country Park in Gateshead, secured.

And English Heritage expects that this year a number of other historic places removed from its At Risk register.

Warkworth church volunteers reach fundraising milestone

Volunteers behind plans to save a centuries-old village church are hoping for success after reaching a monumental point in their campaign.

St. Lawrence's Church in Warkworth dates back to Norman times and is one of only two churches with the original ancient spires in the county.

However, during recent years, the building's north wall, an unusually complete survival from the period, has been leaning outwards, meaning urgent action is required to ensure the safety of the church.
