Charity run brought back by new motorcycle group

Caring bikers are riding to the rescue of a popular North East charity event which nearly reached the end of the road after almost two decades.

Every year since 1991, scores of leather-clad motorcyclists have taken part in the annual Easter Egg run organised by the Northumberland Bikers' club.

They collected thousands of chocolate eggs donated by customers at various pubs and clubs and then set off in a huge motorbike convoy to deliver them to children and elderly people in hospitals and homes across Northumberland and Tyneside.

Community groups warned of tight council budget

Voluntary and community groups in Northumberland have been warned they are facing a reduction in funding for their work - because of the recession and tough budget savings required by the county council.

However, County Hall bosses have reassured the sector that a funding package of £1.3m will still be available next year. Budget proposals recommend more money for charities directly supporting those people worst affected by the recession.

These will include services such as credit unions and the Citizens' Advice Bureau.

The Northumberland section of the National Federation of Young Farmers is hosting a competition that will bring teams of young agricultural workers from all over the North of the country into competition in a number of activities.

Each local group of the federation will put together its own team to take part in some traditional sports such as football and rugby, while there will also be some more unusual disciplines to contend with - such as a pantomime competition.

Amble footballer mends it like Beckham

On the ball Jordan Giles has made a pitch perfect return to footie.

It was feared his career was shattered when he suffered a horrific leg injury.

But in his very first game, just weeks after his plaster was removed, Jordan was made man of the match after putting in a sparkling performance.

The modest teenager said: "I was really pleased, but I don't think I deserved to be made Man of the Match."

Jordan, 16, had long been a key player for his local team FC Amble Juniors, and was on the verge of being recommended to Newcastle United when he broke his right leg in two places, and dislocated his ankle, in a playground game of football in June.
